Reception: What does it take to be a superhero?
Back
What an exciting and inspiring term we’ve had in Reception! Our learning has centred around our big question: “What does it take to be a superhero?”, and the children have explored this in so many creative and hands‑on ways.
This term we were lucky to welcome real-life heroes into school, including the local firefighters and the RAC, who showed us how they help people in their jobs every day. We also loved our visit from Little City, where the children had the chance to try out different roles and imagine themselves in a variety of professions. One of our favourite moments was dressing up as superheroes to create a special calendar for parents as part of our high-stakes project.
We’ve also been developing practical skills, such as learning how to safely use a knife to cut fruit and make our very own fruit kebabs. A big thank you to all the parents who donated fruit—your support made this delicious learning possible.
Our focus story, Supertato, has inspired lots of discussion and imaginative play as we explored the characters, their motivations, and what makes someone a hero. Alongside this, the children have
been making brilliant progress across the curriculum. In maths, we have been perfecting our number bonds to 5, exploring odd and even numbers, comparing greater than and fewer than, and developing a deep understanding of the numbers 6, 7 and 8. The children are also becoming much more confident at solving problems and explaining their thinking.
With all the exciting experiences we’ve shared, the children have also shown wonderful growth in their social skills—asking thoughtful questions, sharing resources, and taking turns during activities. We’ve even been thinking about the future by talking about what we might like to be when we grow up and what skills we can practise now to help us get there.
It has truly been a successful and joy-filled term. Well done, Reception—you are all superheroes in the making!
