Year Two enjoyed a fantastic Summer 1 term filled with exciting learning experiences which have enabled them to investigate their big question: How can we learn from animals? From exploring new topics in the classroom to engaging in hands-on activities, the children embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm.

In Reading, the children read The Jungle Book and explored what it might be like to be Mowgli. We then looked at a non-fiction text called Caring for Exotic Animals. As part of our learning, the children were very excited to meet Zoomie, a real-life bearded dragon! This inspired the children to write their own exotic animal fact files which were a roaring success!

In Writing, children initially studied the setting of the Jungle Book and identified adjectives, adverbs and similes in their model text. This then enthused them to write their own setting descriptions using a variety of photos as well as real-life experiences.

In Science, they explored microhabitats and how these support the needs of plants and animals. A highlight was their visit to the WWT Learning Zone in London, where they took part in the Minibeast Safari workshop. There, they investigated different habitats, identified minibeasts, and learned how to classify and observe them like real scientists. Children especially enjoyed their woodlice experiment where they discovered that woodlice prefer damp conditions. Another favourite investigation was observing worms in the wormery they made.

They also used artefacts from Museum Learning to understand how Jane Goodall carried out her research, bringing her inspiring work to life through real-world exploration. Alongside their scientific studies, Year 2 worked hard on their end-of-year production of The Jungle Book. From creating costumes to rehearsing songs and dances, the children showed amazing dedication and creativity. They’ve loved every moment and can’t wait to perform!
